STRUNG

Stabilimentum (web decorations) receive their name from the hypothesis that they mainly serve to stabilize a spider ’s web. While this theory has been proven false, one explanation proposes that the stabilimentum is a spider ’s way to deplete silk supplies and revitalize their silk glands. 3D printers don’t have glands, but they employ methods to extrude filament precisely through retraction speeds and distances.

This project explores the possibilities of limiting retraction and using feeds and speeds as the primary design tool. The result is a woven-like pattern that retains structural integrity while reducing the amount of material needed. Studies were conducted to hone the feeds and speeds as well as test the structural viability of different edge patterns. The materials tested included PLA composites such as ceramic powder PLA and coconut fiber PLA.
